How to recognize it

Small tit, 10–11.5 cm

Thin whistled call, like “tsi-tsi”

The Eurasian Penduline-Tit is a small, neat-looking fellow with a pale head, a dark mask, and a warm brown back. It is easier to notice in motion than to pick out from a distance, which suits its quiet, careful way of moving.

Its voice is a thin, high whistle, often heard as a short "tsi-tsi". In everyday life it tends to stay out of the open, and during breeding it stands out for its building habit — the male makes several soft nests, while the female chooses one and finishes the job.

It stays in thickets along rivers, lakes, and marshes, and looks for food in trees, shrubs, and reeds. It eats insects, spiders, and seeds; in Eastern and Central Europe some move south for winter, while around the Mediterranean some remain all year.
