How to recognize it

11–12 cm, very small finch
Slim, short-tailed shape
Dark-streaked grey-green upperparts, yellow rump
Yellow face and breast, yellow wing bars

The European serin is a small, lively finch that often stands out in parks and gardens. Its pale greenish-yellow tones and short tail make it look neat and light, especially when it pauses in the open.

It is often noticed by voice first. The thin buzzing trill carries clearly, and outside the breeding season it gathers in flocks; the song can sound especially bright from treetops or in flight.

It favors parks, gardens, groves, and other human-shaped green spaces. It feeds mainly on seeds, adds insects in the breeding season, and northern populations move south for winter, while others stay closer to home.
