Golden Eagle leaves a strong impression even at a distance: large, compact, and built for the air, it soars for long stretches with hardly a wingbeat. Its whole presence feels calm and powerful, with a severe look that fits its hunting style.

It is usually quiet, so you notice it more by movement than by sound. During courtship, near the nest, or when defending a territory, it may give a thin whistle or a sharp ringing call, and in the sky it can circle high overhead before suddenly dropping with astonishing speed.

This raptor favors open and semi-open country, especially mountains, cliffs, steppe, and scattered woodland away from busy human areas. It feeds mainly on hares, rodents, and other readily available prey, and some northern populations move south in winter or shift to lower, less snowy ground.
