Strong white supercilium; male with blackish face mask and white wing patches

Whinchat keeps a low profile and spends most of its time close to the ground. It is short-tailed, moving in quick hops and often bobbing its tail and wings as it goes.

Its call is sharp and easy to remember. It sings and hunts from high shrubs, stems, and other lookout spots, where it can watch for prey.

It favors flood meadows, pasture, marshes, and open wasteland. It feeds on insects, worms, snails, spiders, and berries, especially in autumn, and it migrates south to sub-Saharan Africa for the winter.
