About the park
Sormovskiy Park covers 146 hectares where the marshy floodplain of the Parasha met the pine stand of Daryinsky Forest. Relict pines from the former forest remain among its plantings, alongside an oak grove and avenues of lime, elm and birch. Larch and white acacia are also part of the tree planting, while the park’s regular layout survives in its central section.

The park was conceived in the 1920s alongside construction of the cultural palace for the Krasnoye Sormovo plant. Its boundaries were set in Nizhny Novgorod’s master plan, on the outskirts of working-class Sormovo at the time. The park was laid out in 1933; architects E. V. Shervinsky and L. S. Zalesskaya designed it, and the final project was approved in March 1934. It opened in 1935, built through voluntary labour by workers from several factories. In 1970, a stele honouring Sormovo revolutionaries was erected on Parkovaya Embankment, at the site of illegal gatherings of Sormovo workers in the early twentieth century.
