How to recognize it

Largest Curruca warbler, about 15.5–18 cm; grey-brown above, darker crown
Whitish below with strong barred/scaly pattern across the breast and flanks
Rump feathers show dark centers with white tips, giving a scaly look
In bushes, stays hidden; awkward on the ground, agile through dense branches

The Barred Warbler is a fairly large, quiet warbler with a calm, contained way of moving. On the ground it looks clumsy, but in thick branches it moves quickly and confidently.

It is cautious, especially near the nest, and may abandon it if a person comes too close. Its song is more chattery and slightly harsher than sweet or melodic.

It lives in bushy thickets, low shrubs, and places with dense undergrowth. It eats insects, spiders, snails, and berries, and leaves for eastern Africa in winter.
