How to recognize it

Small, slim goose, smaller than most geese
Black head and back; white cheek patch by the bill; bold white side stripe
Chestnut-red cheeks, breast and throat edged with narrow white
Fast flight, restless flocking; call sharp, two-syllable, staccato

Red-breasted Goose feels alert, lively, and always a little restless. It looks like a compact goose with a short neck, and its bold contrast stands out especially well when it is flying or moving across the water. Its movements are quick and busy, with a surprisingly fast flight and constant shifting in the flock. It calls loudly when landing or taking off, with sharp, ringing notes and a hiss that make the whole group sound unusually animated. It breeds in the tundra of northern Russia, usually near water and open higher ground, often close to cliffs or riverbanks. Its food is entirely plant-based, and in winter and on migration it feeds in meadows, pastures, and fields, often spending the cold season in the Black Sea region.

I saw it today!
