Savi's Warbler is a secretive reed-bed singer, easier to hear than to spot. It has a plain, even brown look that blends neatly into the stems around it.

It moves with a careful climbing habit, using reeds as little pathways, and when alarmed it may drop suddenly with its neck stretched out. The call is a short sharp note, while the song is deeper, brief, and rhythmically building, often carrying through the marsh.

It depends on broad wet reedbeds and older reed stands, where insects and spiders are easy to find and cover is close at hand. After the breeding season it leaves for Africa and returns with the warmer months.
