About the forest

On the edge of Tver’s Proletarsky District, Pervomayskaya roscha lies beside the Tmaka River, close to a large residential area, Pervomaysky settlement and a hospital complex. Forest covers 95.5 per cent of the grove, and all wooded ground is pine, with trees averaging 72 years old. Of the pine stands, 7.5 hectares are artificial plantings. A wasteland and clearings cover 1.7 hectares; roads and other non-wooded ground account for 0.7 hectares. The understorey includes raspberry, rowan, red elder, birch and boxelder, with willow and honeysuckle occurring singly; lingonberry is also recorded in the vegetation. A network of unpaved walking paths runs through the woodland.

Documents place the pine grove in the surroundings of the Assumption Zheltikov Monastery, founded in 1384. The monastery stood at Zheltikovo, 5.35 km from Tver, and the grove on its western side was then called Zheltikovskaya. The records place this woodland in the monastery landscape as early as the fourteenth century. In 1982, a forest park was established here as a recreational site and nature monument.

Birds recorded nearby include the common gull, Eurasian jackdaw and common swift.
