About the forest
Vinnovskaya roscha is the last surviving fragment in Ulyanovsk of a relict lime-and-oak woodland, covering 135.4 hectares. Its old trees include an oak about 400 years old, and 280 plant species are recorded in the grove. Three springs, Sakharny, Knyaginin and Lotochek, are named here; a lake lies beside Lotochek. The woodland is home to many animals and has survived the logging that began with the construction of Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk.

From the late eighteenth century until the mid-twentieth, the grove was known as Kindiakovskaya, after the surname of the owners of the local estate. In Ivan Goncharov’s novel The Precipice, the grove and the village of Vinnovka are linked with the fictional place of Malinovka. On 1 May 1907, the grove’s north-western section hosted one of the first May Day gatherings in Simbirsk: an illegal meeting of workers. Fighting took place here in 1918 between Red Army soldiers and an officers’ battalion of the People’s Army of Komuch. In 1961, Vinnovskaya roscha became the first regional nature monument in Ulyanovsk Oblast.
Birds recorded nearby include the song thrush, the Eurasian jackdaw and the black-headed gull.
