The Common Greenshank looks neat and upright, with a long bill and long greenish legs. Along water’s edge, it gives an alert, restrained impression rather than a restless one.

It is wary by nature, and its voice is a quick run of short, fluty notes. It forages with steady precision, taking small aquatic animals and, when it can, small fish as well.

It is tied to small wetlands, marshes, dams, and rivers. It breeds in the north and moves south for winter, reaching the Mediterranean, West Africa, and southern Africa.
