How to recognize it
The glaucous gull looks broad and powerful, with a very pale plumage and a heavy bill that gives it a solid, unhurried presence. In flight and on the water, it feels bigger and bulkier than many other gulls.
Its call is a rough, laughing sound, deeper than the familiar gull cry. It breeds either alone or in small colonies, and around the nest it can be bold and persistent.
It lives on rocky coasts and islands, and more rarely in coastal tundra. Its diet is broad, including fish, molluscs, carrion, berries, eggs, chicks, and other easy food; in winter it moves south.
