About the park

Aksakov Garden occupies a block bounded by Pushkin, Novomostovaya, Zaki Validi and Tsyurupy streets in Ufa. Its regular layout frames distinct natural features in separate areas. At the main entrance, Canadian poplars reach about 30 metres in height, with trunks up to 1.1–1.2 metres in diameter; more than fifty old trees grow in the garden. Willows line the pond, a spring lies nearby, and white poplars grow in the eastern part. Two rock gardens add patches of stony ground among the tree plantings.

The pond began with a change to the ground itself. In 1822, the Aksakov family used an embankment across an unnamed ravine as a dam, forming a pond at the ravine’s head. A stream flowed out and became the main right-bank tributary of the Nogayka River. The writer Sergei Aksakov’s parents had acquired an estate here with fruit plantings after their marriage in 1788. He was born on 20 September (1 October) 1791 in a house beside the present-day main entrance. The house burned down in 1821, and a memorial sign marks its site. In 1833, a public garden with paths and flowerbeds was laid out using donations from the Ufa merchant A. Blokhin; visitors paid to use it for recreation. The garden later became a theatre venue: the wooden Vidineevsky Theatre, built in 1894, stood until 1991.

Birds recorded nearby include the fieldfare, Bohemian waxwing, Eurasian siskin, red crossbill and hooded crow.
