About the park

Four artificial ponds lie within Max Ashmann Park; the largest is now called Lake Lesnoye. Severny Stream runs through the park and empties into Verkhny Pond. A branching network of drainage channels links the ponds to Verkhny Pond, with gabions reinforcing the channel banks. Before the war, small clearings with solitary trees were set among the groves, and paths crossed the stream on bridges.

The park began as a gift to Königsberg. In 1903, the entrepreneur Max Ashmann bequeathed the Maraunenhof estate to the city and donated 100,000 marks to create a park. By 1910 it covered 25 hectares; work from 1915 to 1940 nearly tripled its area. During that period, the ponds were lined with stone, and their water levels were regulated because groundwater lay close to the surface. After the war, the drainage system no longer worked as before. The park flooded, many trees died, and the ponds became shaded and overgrown with reeds.

In 1912, park workers gave the city 34 swans they had raised. The birds settled on the pond and usually stayed through the winter, when townspeople came to feed them. Mallards, Eurasian coots, mute swans, whooper swans and great spotted woodpeckers have been recorded nearby.
