About the park
About 47 hectares of Kaliningrad Central Park are crossed by Parkovy Stream, formerly known as Hufenfreigraben. The park lies between Mira Avenue, Pushkin Street, Dmitry Donskoy Street and Sergeant Koloskov Street. Its ground is hilly: Luisenwahl’s hills once held a fruit orchard, which froze in the harsh winter of 1929–30. Afterwards, children went sledging there.

The park began as the Pojenters estate, which stood here at the end of the eighteenth century. In the 1780s, Ober-Burgomaster Theodor von Hippel acquired the estate and redesigned its park according to English principles. In 1796, school official K. G. Busolt bought the park and named it Luisenwahl after his wife, Louise. In 1808–09, the estate became the summer residence of the Prussian king Frederick William III and Queen Louise. A memorial to the queen was placed at the park’s highest point in 1874; in 1914, William II transferred the property to the city. After the Second World War, Luisenwahl was combined with the Third Altstadt Cemetery and renamed Kalinin Park.
