About the park

Olympic Park lies on the Imeretinsky Lowland beside the Black Sea. At the centre of the complex, a water basin and fountain are surrounded by sports venues. Near Fisht Stadium, an Old Believer cemetery remains within a circular grove; plants almost entirely screen it from the surrounding development.

The Imeretinsky Lowland was an important bird area and had been protected since 1911. Construction of the Olympic complex began in late 2007, and most of the lowland was destroyed in the process; the main works were complete by 2013. The cemetery, dating from 1915, was retained amid the new development. Fisht Stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics and was later rebuilt for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Birds recorded nearby include the great cormorant, European starling and house sparrow.
