About the park
Bashkiriya National Park occupies the south-western slopes of the Southern Urals, with the Nugush forming its northern boundary and the Belaya curving around the mountain massif to the south. From the plains in the west, the land rises towards the medium-height limestone uplands in the east. Rivers cut through wooded valleys, where rocky banks reach 150 metres in places. Forest covers most of the park, chiefly broadleaved and small-leaved broadleaved woodland, with pine and pine-birch forest in small patches. The Nugush Reservoir lies west of the mountains, where the river emerges from them; Bear Meadow is one of the park’s few open areas.

Limestone underlies a broad karst landscape of cliffs, caves, grottoes and underground rivers. The Kuperlya Natural Bridge is the remnant of a collapsed karst cave; its arch rises about 20 metres and is 10 metres wide. About 30 caves are known in the park. In the Kutuk-Sumgan massif, Sumgan Cave has underground passages extending for up to 10 kilometres and reaching a depth of 126 metres. The park borders Shulgan-Tash Nature Reserve to the east and lies where the plains give way to the mountainous Southern Urals.
A total of 231 bird species have been recorded in the park, with breeding recorded for 148. Among birds recorded nearby are the great tit, Eurasian blue tit, yellowhammer, Eurasian bullfinch and common raven.
