About the park
The park lies on the Vishtynets Moraine Upland, where glacial landforms left hilly ridges, moraine ramparts, deep ravines and abundant boulders. Vishtynetskoye Lake, the largest body of water in Kaliningrad Oblast, is known for its clear water and great depth. Small rivers, springs and wetlands lie alongside the lake; floodplain forests grow in river valleys, and black alder woods occupy wetter ground. Elsewhere, mixed spruce and broadleaf forests and pine stands cover the slopes, which give way to valleys and wetlands.

In the pre-revolutionary period and between the world wars, this territory formed part of Romintskaya Pushcha, a large forest complex in East Prussia. During the Soviet period, the land was used only to a limited extent and retained its natural character. Today, the Russian part of the upland belongs to a transboundary natural complex that also includes the Polish part of Romintskaya Pushcha and Lithuania’s Vishtitis Regional Park; the forest continues across national borders. The lake’s name is linked to the Lithuanian word višta, meaning “hen”; vištytis means “chick”. Its outline is thought to resemble a running hen.
Vishtynetskoye Lake and the adjoining wetlands provide habitat for waterfowl and other water-associated birds, and serve as a stopover along migration routes. Birds recorded nearby include the great tit, Eurasian wren, Eurasian blackbird, mute swan and common chaffinch.
The federal national park was established on 1 April 2024 from the nature park of the same name and is managed by the Curonian Spit National Park administration. The Vishtynets group of forest lakes is particularly important for cavity-nesting ducks: common goldeneye and goosander. The administration describes these lakes as almost their only regular breeding location in Kaliningrad Oblast.
