About the lake
Lembolovskoye Lake runs for 9.7 km from south to north and is up to 2 km wide. Its deeply indented shoreline makes an uneven succession of bays and projecting points. The water is shallow: depths are about 1.5 m in the south and 0.9 m in the middle, rising to 3.4 m in the north. The deepest point, at 8.3 m, lies about 1 km south of the source of the River Vyun. Pine and mixed forest reaches the shore, with hills rising around the lake. The rivers Gruzinka, Muratovka and Roika, along with several streams, flow into it; its outflow is the Vyun.

The lake belongs to the basin of Lake Ladoga. Its Finnish name, Lempaalanjärvi, is translated as “Devil’s Lake” and linked to the Karelian word lembo, meaning “devil”; another possible explanation derives it from lambi, meaning “lake”. In the 1500 census book of the Vodskaya Pyatina, the lake was recorded as Lembagalskoye. A 1927 description attributed the name of Bear Peninsula to the former abundance of bears there. That account also mentioned Finnish villages around the lake and an old Lutheran church near Lembolovo.
Birds recorded nearby include black-headed gull, common goldeneye, mallard, great crested grebe and hooded crow.
