About the lake

Imandra stretches for 120 kilometres, its intricate shoreline dotted with more than 140 islands. The largest, Erm Island, covers 26 square kilometres. Narrow straits divide the lake into Greater Imandra, or Khibinskaya Imandra, in the north; Ekostrovskaya Imandra in the centre; and Babinskaya Imandra in the south-west. At its normal impoundment level, the lake covers 876 square kilometres, with an average depth of 16 metres and a maximum depth of 67 metres. Around twenty tributaries flow into Imandra, while the Niva River drains it.

The hydroelectric cascade on the Niva altered the lake’s water regime, turning it into a reservoir with multi-year regulation of its level. Before regulation, Imandra covered 812 square kilometres; at normal impoundment level, it covers 876. Construction of the Kola road later changed the connections between the lake’s three parts: dams partly blocked Shirokaya Salma and Ekostrovsky straits, leaving narrow passages beneath the bridges. Water exchange declined, and the outflow current became more noticeable in Ekostrovsky Strait, though fish still pass through the straits. In 1915, freight, food and equipment for the construction of the Murmansk railway were carried across the lake.

Birds recorded nearby include the common goldeneye and common sandpiper.
