About the lake

Kola Bay is a narrow fjord of the Barents Sea, 57 km long. At its entrance, the water reaches depths of 200–300 metres, and the bay is up to 7 km wide in places. Its shores have sharply different profiles: the western bank is rocky and precipitous, while the eastern is comparatively gentle. The bay’s geomorphology divides its waters into three sections. The southern section runs for about 14.5 km and narrows to between 850 and 1,700 metres, with the narrowest point near Abram-Pakhta. The Tuloma and Kola rivers flow into the head of the bay, where semi-diurnal tides rise by as much as four metres.

The narrow sea passage was once difficult for Russian seafarers, a challenge captured in the saying, “Kola Bay is like a Moscow prison: you do not get out soon.” A road bridge across the bay opened in 2005. Murmansk and Severomorsk, both with ice-free ports, stand on the eastern shore; Polyarny port is on the western shore.

Birds recorded nearby include common eider, common gull, European herring gull, mallard and long-tailed duck.
