The park’s history is linked to country estates beyond Nevskaya Zastava. During the reign of Catherine II, a hunting castle was built there for the empress and nearby woodland was landscaped; dachas belonging to courtiers, including Kurakin, Chernov and Apraksin, began to appear. Around 1925–1926, the park was named after Ivan Vasilyevich Babushkin, who began his revolutionary activity beyond Nevskaya Zastava while working at the former Semennikovsky factory.

Birds recorded nearby include the Eurasian coot, European herring gull and rock pigeon.
