About the park
Western Kotlin Nature Sanctuary occupies the northwestern tip of Kotlin Island. Black alder and young aspen woodland give way to willows and coastal vegetation along sandy shores. Nearby reed-fringed shallows are important for breeding and migrating birds.

An approximately 1.5-kilometre nature trail starts at the northern gates of Fort Shants and follows tracks, woodland paths and beaches. Flooding can make sections difficult to pass in late autumn.
