About the lake

Kapka measures roughly 60 by 40 metres, with rocks all around it and water constantly dripping from their faces—the detail that gave the lake its name. Cold, weakly mineralised calcium-sulphate water is supplied by springs; the lake is no more than three metres deep and has a silty bottom. Its rocky shore meets a park and a children’s playground. Water from Kapka and Bolshoye Lake flows into a third lake below them, while Kapka and Nizhneye Lake also feed a stream, a tributary of the Dzhemukha, that irrigates local gardens.

Batalinskaya Cave, also known as Kapelnitsa, lies in the rock adjoining the lake on its southern side and is a regional natural monument. A local legend tells of a prince’s daughter who loved a blacksmith. After she waited in vain for him at the shore, she turned to stone; the legend makes the rock and the lake images of the lovers. The story also lives on in a wedding custom: newlyweds hang padlocks on a railing and throw the keys over their shoulders into the water. In the legend, the lake’s water is the girl’s tears.

Among the birds recorded nearby are mallards, barn swallows and bank swallows.
