About the park

The park was laid out on uneven, open ground in front of the Nikolaevsky Baths, where a natural pool of mineral water lay at the centre of the site. Its banks were reshaped into a regular form and the surrounding ground levelled; between the pool and the baths, the designers made an octagonal parterre with flower beds, lawns and shrubs. The pool was filled in 1850. During the 2018–2019 reconstruction, 166,000 flowers, 724 ornamental shrubs and 83 trees were planted. Coloured paving slabs were added alongside the existing paths surfaced with crushed red stone.

General G. A. Emmanuel commissioned the park in 1828–1829, with a design by the brothers Joseph and Johann Bernardazzi. Created as a garden beside the newly built Nikolaevsky Baths, it was first called Nikolaevsky Tsvetnik and had become a centre of resort life by 1850. Permanent buildings were prohibited, so only light wooden structures were allowed; by 1890 these included the Tsvetnik café-restaurant, the Kumysny and Vodoprodazhny pavilions, and a book kiosk. In 1858 the garden was extended to the boulevard, now Kirov Avenue, with 45 trees planted and 14 flower beds laid out. From 1872, seasonal tickets for the Caucasian Mineral Waters resort included the right to enter the garden.

Mallards, great tits and common wood-pigeons are among the birds recorded nearby.
