About the park

TSPKiO im. Mayakovskogo lies in a bend of the Iset, among pine woodland that was once on the city’s outskirts. Of its 94 hectares, 70 are woodland; open ground around the central avenue, squares and summer stage sits alongside the forest. For its first 10–12 years, a small pond lay beside the central avenue, and the park was chiefly a place for outdoor recreation within the city.

The park was established in May 1933 on the site of former merchants’ dachas. In the 19th century, public festivities were already held in Meshchanskaya Roshcha. The official opening followed on 18 June 1933. The park was named in honour of Vladimir Mayakovsky on the poet’s 40th anniversary and five years after his visit to Sverdlovsk. During the Second World War, the park closed and its grounds served as a training ground for the motorised-rifle reconnaissance battalion of the Ural Volunteer Tank Corps; it reopened in 1943. Reconstruction in the 1950s and 1960s shifted the central avenue to the left and added brick buildings and arches at the main entrance.

Birds recorded nearby include the mallard, great tit, hooded crow, Eurasian magpie and rock pigeon.
