About the park
Most of Solnechny Ostrov lies on a northern island enclosed by Lake Staraya Kuban, with the park’s grounds also reaching the banks of the Kuban River. Alleys and flower beds cross the island, threading between pine groves and a stand of birch, while avenues of pyramidal oak and lime offer a different pattern of shade. The flower beds open clearings among the trees, and some woodland sections are as much as 160 years old. Across the park, 90 species and forms of trees and shrubs are recorded.

On 14 June 1876, land beside the Kuban that now falls within the park passed into the hereditary ownership of Marfa Golovataya, widow of the Kuban writer and colonel Golovaty. In the early twentieth century, entrepreneur Adolf Rokkel acquired the land, began cultivating rare trees and shrubs, and linked the island to the mainland with three wooden bridges. In 1927, the ophthalmologist and traveller S. V. Ochapovsky wrote that the island still retained tree cover in its natural state. A tree nursery and a flower-growing enterprise later operated here; in 1959, they became the basis for a park of culture and recreation named for the 40th anniversary of October. Decisions in 1981 and 1988 established the park’s status as a regional natural monument.
Among the birds recorded nearby are the Eurasian coot, mallard and black-headed gull.
