About the park
The winding Kolpanka, also known as the Pilnaya, marks Sylvia Park’s northern edge and separates it from Zverinets. On its bank stands the former Dairy Farm complex; across the water is the stone pavilion Ptichnik. Near these buildings, the river has a ruined dam and cascade, a temporary footbridge and the Naumachia pool. Sylvia is a formal park, with paths once running along its fences. One stretch beside the brick fence, turning towards the stone wall, is overgrown with grass, young trees and shrubs.

The park was created from 1792 to 1800 by architect Vincenzo Brenna and garden master James Hackett. Its name recalls a French journey by Pavel Petrovich and his wife: on 10–12 June 1782 they visited Chantilly, where a park called Sylvie already existed. Near the Sylvian Gates, a stone wall marks the place where Gatchina’s Komsomol heroes were shot on 30 June 1942; a monument stands nearby. Search work begun in the park in May 2022 uncovered the remains of more than 100 victims of fascism.
Among the birds recorded nearby are the mallard, Eurasian coot and European herring gull.
