About the park
Rakovye Lakes Nature Sanctuary lies in the central Karelian Isthmus. Its core consists of Bolshoye Rakovoye, Maloye Rakovoye and Okhotnichye lakes, surrounded by wetlands and mainly pine forest. The creation of the Losevo channel in 1857 lowered the former lake’s water level and accelerated vegetation growth.

The shallow, food-rich lakes and reedbeds attract breeding and migrating waterbirds. Ducks, gulls and terns use the area, while migrating swans include whooper and tundra swans.
