About the lake

At Ruza Reservoir, shallow water is an important part of the birds’ landscape. Along the Lidino shore, reeds and willows fringe the water near streams and the mouth of the Pravaya Pednya River. Flocks of waterbirds and birds of the shoreline stop here during migration. Behind the waterside vegetation are spruce and birch-spruce woods, waterlogged stands of birch and alder, clearings and woodland edges. Open water, shallows and forest form parts of the same shore.

The reservoir entered service in 1966 after a dam was built near Palashkino. Water flooded the Ruza valley, creating bays at the mouths of the Pednya and Voloshnya. Their outlines still change: falling water levels leave shallower bays, while spring filling expands the water's surface again. This seasonal rhythm reflects river inflow, rainfall and the operation of the hydraulic complex, which supplies Moscow with water.

Red-necked grebe and black kite have been recorded along the Lidino shoreline. These records refer to this part of the reservoir, including the adjoining woodland and water. Scan the water beside the vegetation first, then look at the sky above the shore to watch for birds in different parts of the landscape.
