About the lake
The 'Mozhaysk Sea' has a broad expanse of water and wooded shores. Much of its interest lies in that meeting of water and trees: the woodland edge follows the shore of a large reservoir in the upper reaches of the Moskva River. The water's surface and the forest margin form two parts of the same view.

Filling began in January 1960 after a dam was built near Marfin Brod; the reservoir reached its planned water level in 1962. The present-day 'sea' was created by damming the Moskva River to store runoff, supply the capital with water and reduce flood peaks. Its construction also required protection for the historic Borodino battlefield, which rising water could have reached along the Kolocha valley.
Black kite has been recorded at Mozhaysk Reservoir. Look for brown plumage, broad wings with fingered tips and a shallow fork in the tail. If you spot a bird of prey above the water, follow it for a few seconds: the outline of its tail is often clearer as it turns.
