About the park

Seven Springs protects the Protva’s river margins and wooded slopes as one natural area. Alder thickets, streams and damp meadows provide habitat for waterside birds; old spruce and mixed woods occupy the slopes above. Shaded forest with dense undergrowth, open grassy slopes and a wet floodplain lie close together. This variety gives woodland and waterside birds distinct habitats within the same valley.

The springs help build the landscape itself. Water emerges on limestone slopes and deposits calcium carbonate, forming travertine terraces over which streams and waterfalls flow. Rare mosses grow on the continuously damp surfaces. These formations, together with the valley’s woods and meadows, received protected status in 2017. The spring water both feeds the floodplain and gradually creates stone ledges on the hillside.

Common Sandpipers and Green Sandpipers occur in the floodplain, while Grey Herons feed by the water. Watch a Common Sandpiper from a distance and you may notice its repeated bobbing. Black Woodpeckers have been recorded in the spruce woods, and European Robins and European Pied Flycatchers in deciduous and mixed forest. Tree Pipits and Yellowhammers occur in meadows and along woodland edges. As you move from the river towards the wooded slope, listen for the change in birdsong.
