About the park
The estate grounds are cut by ravines and descend steeply towards the ponds. The protected park includes the Tsaritsyno Ponds and Borisovsky Pond, the valleys of the Yazvenka River and Borisovsky Stream, and Biryulyovsky Forest Park and Arboretum. Broad woodland areas lie alongside these waters and valleys.

A settlement of the Middle Bronze Age Fatyanovo culture has been discovered here; it was the first settlement of this culture found in the Volga–Oka interfluve. The Fatyanovo people were the first in this locality to practise farming and keep livestock. Burial mounds dating from the 11th–13th centuries bear witness to the later presence of the Vyatichi. In 1775, Catherine II acquired the village for a new residence, and construction of the palace complex to Vasily Bazhenov’s design began the following year. It was conceived as a monument to Russia’s victory over Turkey in 1774, but in 1786 the Empress ordered the demolition of part of the buildings already erected.
