About the park

The Don Nature Park includes open meadows and steppe, wetlands and coniferous-deciduous woodland. In the central part of the Island section are saline floodplain meadows, while steppe plant communities occur along the park’s northern boundary. Floodplain woods include stands of willow and alder, with elms also present.

The park’s two sections lie in different parts of Rostov Oblast: the Don Delta section extends across Azov, Myasnikovsky and Neklinovsky districts, while the Island section is in Tsimlyansky District, near Volgodonsk. Migratory and semi-migratory fish pass through the delta to spawn; carp and zander spawn there, and fish also overwinter in its waters. The park was established by a resolution of the Rostov Oblast administration on 8 September 2005. In 2016, the regional government confirmed Donskoy’s status as a natural monument.

Rare birds living in the park and listed in the Rostov Oblast Red Book include the red-breasted goose, lesser white-fronted goose, white-headed duck and white-tailed eagle. Geese, swans, gulls and waders are among the park’s frequently encountered birds. Among birds recorded nearby are the Eurasian collared-dove, mute swan, Eurasian hoopoe, gray heron and mallard.
