About the lake
About 50 kilometres north of Yekaterinburg, Ayatskoe Lake lies amid forest, with a broad expanse of open water at its centre. Much of the shoreline is peaty and marshy, and the peat darkens the water. The nearest village is Shayduriha, where the forest edge meets the lake’s open surface.

In 1825, a dam across the Ayat River created the reservoir, flooding several lakes that had previously occupied the site. Before they were submerged, raised ground between the lakes and connecting channels had been inhabited since the Mesolithic. Archaeologists have found traces of several cultures here; one became known as the Ayat culture. Since 1975, the lake and its surrounding forests have formed a state landscape reserve.
The lake covers 28.3 square kilometres. Its average depth is 2.18 metres, reaching a maximum of 4 metres, and the bottom is silty. The Kunarka and Shaitan are among the rivers that flow into it; the Ayat begins here. The lake lies 237 metres above sea level.
