About the lake

Lake Iset lies north-west of Yekaterinburg, beside Sredneuralsk, and covers 24 square kilometres. About 8 kilometres long, it is shallow: the average depth is 2.5 metres and the maximum is 3.5. Shallows spread into four bays on the eastern shore—Lebyazhy, Teplay, Cheremshansky and Mulyanka. The Shitovsky Istok, Chernaya, Lebyazhka and Mulyanka flow into the lake; the Iset is its sole outflow. Small islands, including Solovetsky, Krasnenky and Kamenny, break the water’s surface. Mountains and forests surround the lake, forming a landscape typical of the southern-taiga Trans-Urals.

Construction of an earthen dam at the source of the Iset began in 1850. In 1946 it was replaced by a concrete dam, raising the lake to its present level; its water is used by Sredneuralskaya GRES. The rise also submerged traces of earlier human life. Archaeologists found more than a dozen settlements along the shores, dating from the Neolithic to the Iron Age, and ochre images on one island were flooded as the water level increased.

Birds recorded nearby include the long-tailed tit, great tit, Eurasian blackbird, Eurasian bullfinch and Eurasian jay.
