About the park

In the lower reaches of the Sergi River, between Nizhnie Sergi and Arakaevo, mountain taiga meets the Krasnoufimsk forest-steppe. On the western slopes of the Bardymsky Ridge, maples, elms and lime trees grow alongside spruce and fir; patches of relict steppe extend north up the river valley as far as Nizhnie Sergi. The area’s caves and rocky riverbanks reflect a long geological history: limestone accumulated on the seabed of an ancient sea, the ridges later rose, and erosion wore into the rock, forming caves, sinkholes and karst hollows.

The case for protecting this boundary between natural zones was first scientifically argued in 1963. From the mid-1970s, student enthusiasts at Ural State University surveyed the area, marked trails, built erosion-control descents on slopes and constructed shelters. On 29 October 1999, the park was formally established as the first natural park in Sverdlovsk Oblast. Archaeological finds indicate human presence here at least 14,000 years ago. About 3,000 years ago, hunters made a stylised image known as the Red Deer on Pisanitsa Rock beside the Sergi. It represents a forest animal interpreted as a deer, elk or roe deer; the image became the park’s name and emblem.

Among the birds recorded nearby are the bohemian waxwing, Eurasian jay, common raven, Eurasian magpie and great tit. Red Data Book bird species also occur in the park.
