About the park

Haritonovskiy Garden’s most distinctive feature is its artificial lake: two raised islands sit in the water, and a circular rotunda stands on the island at its centre. The garden is an English-style park adjoining the Rastorguyev-Kharitonov estate.

The garden was laid out in 1826 and named for its founder, P. Ya. Kharitonov. In the south, the grotto is the only surviving structure from the garden’s original buildings. Its brick, domed structure was covered with earth, with a wooden Chinese-style pavilion above it. Rhine wines were stored in the grotto, and ice cream was made there; a winch-operated lift carried it up to a table in the pavilion. The present rotunda on the island was built in 1935–1937. Before then, the islands had no buildings, and a fountain sent jets up from the rotunda’s centre. Another rotunda stood on a hill in the south and appears in Prokudin-Gorsky’s colour photographs of 1910. It later housed a chess club, a games room and a library, before being demolished in 1990 after a fire.

Birds recorded nearby include the mallard, rock pigeon, Bohemian waxwing, hooded crow and great tit.
