About the park
The reserve spans the mainland Kurgalsky Peninsula, islands and waters of the Gulf of Finland, Narva Bay and Luga Bay, as well as lakes. Of its 60,000 hectares, about 38,400 are Gulf of Finland waters and 848 hectares are lakes. The peninsula’s natural and long-cultivated forests include several taiga types, alongside steppe-like coastal meadows that are rare in Leningrad Oblast. Kurgalsky is among the easternmost places where Baltic dune landscapes occur, and one of the northernmost places where oak grows wild. Lime occurs naturally in distinct zones, while broad-leaved trees add to the woodland’s distinctive composition.

The reserve lies on major bird migration routes from northern Siberia to western Europe and Africa. It contains stopover sites and areas of mass nesting. Its coastal natural complexes preserve fish spawning grounds and bird nesting areas, as well as haul-out sites for Baltic ringed seals.
Birds recorded nearby include the western house-martin, sandwich tern, common goldeneye, Eurasian whimbrel and common merganser.
