About the park
Water is a central feature of Marfino's landscape. Ponds, green banks, and trees along the paths sit beside a Gothic bridge, a rotunda, and a landing flanked by griffins. Individual trees and the transition between park and water both give a bird walk focus, changing the distance, view, and height of observation. The park forms part of an operating sanatorium, whose administration sets the conditions for visiting.

The estate existed long before its present palace. In the 1830s and 1840s, Mikhail Bykovsky rebuilt the ensemble for the Panin family, giving it its Gothic Revival appearance. The bridge, stairway, and landing were composed around the pond. This historic design explains the close relationship between water, trees, and architecture.
In winter, bare branches at Marfino make it easier to follow silhouettes and flights between the treetops. Pause beside a tree and scan it from bottom to top: a small, motionless bird is easy to miss at a glance. Then turn your attention to the pond’s edge and watch from the path.
