About the park
Coniferous and mixed woods in the Zvenigorod sanctuary adjoin floodplain meadows and mires, including the Sima raised bog. Bird habitats span woodland layers and neighbouring open ground. Changes in tree cover, undergrowth and moisture create many smaller habitats within this landscape. The same woodland is a setting for biological field research and student training.

The biological station began in 1910 as Sergei Skadovsky’s private station and became part of Moscow State University in 1934. Its site on the right bank of the Moskva developed into a teaching and research base where generations of biologists undertook fieldwork. The surrounding natural areas became a sanctuary in 1981. A programme of bird capture and ringing began in the late 1990s, providing long-term observations of breeding and seasonal changes.
Birds recorded in the station’s woods include Common Chaffinches, European Robins, Eurasian Blackcaps and European Pied Flycatchers. A chaffinch’s white wing bars stand out in flight. Robins use song to mark their territories and defend them against others of their species. Listen for one voice and try to locate the singer among the branches: you may hear it before you notice any movement.
