About the park
Arkhangelskoye's bird habitat lies among palace terraces, avenues, and groves. Formal parterres and open ground meet landscape planting, joined by straight avenues. In the open, a flight between trees is easier to follow; beneath the crowns, the focus shifts to individual trunks, branches, and movement among the leaves. The old trees offer as many details to follow as the marble sculptures and terraces, with changing patterns of closely spaced and open planting and of canopy against sky.

The palace and park ensemble developed in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries under the Golitsyn and Yusupov families. The museum opened on 1 May 1919, preserving the palace, its art collections, and most of the historic park. Formal gardens and landscape groves remain side by side, with birds continuing to inhabit both the estate and its greenery.
Chaffinch, Eurasian nuthatch and great spotted woodpecker have been recorded in the park. The chaffinch has a short song ending in a flourish and two white bars on each wing. The nuthatch can climb down a trunk headfirst. The great spotted woodpecker searches for food by stripping bark and drilling into wood. Choose a tree and watch it for a few minutes: the way a bird moves can be as useful an identification clue as its colours.
