About the park
Pine stands on Lokhin Island adjoin oak, lime and elm, woodland edges meet meadows, and water surrounds the island. Tall grasses and shrubs near Lake Glukhaya Yama, other waters and wet ground provide cover for nesting birds. River margins and quiet waters support a different bird community from the old deciduous woods. Protected sections in the island’s central part preserve this succession of woodland, grassland and wetland habitats.

The name comes from the village of Lokhino, which existed here until 1934. Today, the Moskva’s present channel and an oxbow outline the island near the Arkhangelskoye estate; the river’s former course remains visible in its geography. A nature monument was established here in 1986. The village has gone, but its name remains attached to a landscape where the floodplain continues to shape the lives of birds.
Bluethroats and River Warblers breed near the water. A male Bluethroat has a vivid blue throat in spring, though it can be hard to see as the bird often stays hidden in bushes. Common Moorhens, Mallards and Grey Herons occur in the Moskva River floodplain. White-backed Woodpeckers breed in the old deciduous woods, and Grey-headed Woodpeckers have been recorded in the more open floodplain forest. Listen for calls along the overgrown shore, and scan trunks and large branches among the older trees.
