About the forest
Butovsky Forest Park is a substantial woodland outside the Moscow Ring Road, with residential neighbourhoods close to its edges. More light reaches the young trees along the margins; deeper inside, attention shifts to undergrowth and the spaces between trunks. These offer two scales of birdwatching: flight is visible over an opening, while a bird in dense vegetation is often heard first. Summer leaves conceal much of what can be seen easily from a path in spring.

The forest lies north-west of the residential part of Butovo, towards Akademika Glushko Street and Novobutovsky Proyezd. Its name comes from the surrounding locality, while the woodland predates modern development. Such surviving woods show how south-west Moscow expanded around a formerly rural landscape. Between roads and new neighbourhoods, the transition from a woodland edge into a forest interior remains apparent.
Observations on 8 July 2021, on the Glushko and Polyany streets side, recorded European Robin, singing Eurasian Wren and Dunnock. Both male and female European Robins have an orange breast. The much smaller Eurasian Wren often holds its short tail upright and has a remarkably loud voice for its size. Listening towards the lower vegetation is especially interesting on this forest edge: song revealed several birds in that July record.
