About the park
The steep bank of the Moskva River at Kolomenskoye is cut by ravines carrying small streams. The largest, Golosov Stream, runs through Golosov Ravine, while the Zhuzha River meets the Moskva near the park’s eastern entrance. Springs named Kadochka, Devichy Kamen and Golova Konya are among the reserve’s natural landmarks. A separate remnant of the old wooded landscape is the oak grove: scientific estimates put the age of twelve of its trees at more than 600 years, and the three oldest may be over a thousand.

The village first appears in a written record in Ivan Kalita’s testament of 1339. In 1532, Vasily III commissioned the Church of the Ascension to mark the birth of his son Ivan, later Ivan the Terrible; it is known as the first stone church of tent-like design. Kolomenskoye later became Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich’s summer residence. Its estate included three gardens—Ascension, Kazan and Dyakovo—and apples from the Ascension Garden were supplied to the tsar’s table. The gardens thus served both the estate and the everyday needs of the court.
Among the birds recorded nearby are the Eurasian jackdaw, hooded crow, mallard, European herring gull and great tit.
