About the park
The Kanal pryamougolnogo ostrova and seven ponds are the most conspicuous features of Lefortovo Park’s water system. The ponds include Sapozhok, Golovinsky and Ovalny. Beside them, a lime avenue survives as one of the few features of the garden’s original appearance. Water and old avenue together show how an engineered landscape sits alongside historic planting.

The Golovinsky Garden was laid out in 1703 on the commission of Field Marshal Fyodor Golovin. Peter I acquired the estate in 1722, intending to establish a Moscow residence here; the following year, Nikolai Bidloo began reshaping the garden. Earthworks changed the courses of streams, while dams, cascades and symmetrical paths were added. Under Anna Ioannovna, the residence was named Annenhof. Rastrelli linked the Upper and Lower Gardens with palaces and a cascade of ponds along an axis more than a kilometre long. The park took on the character of a formal palace garden, and contemporaries called it the Versailles on the Yauza.
Among the birds recorded nearby are the hooded crow, great tit, European starling and house sparrow.
