About the park
Garden Pond places water at the centre of Ostankino's wooded landscape. Around it, open walking areas meet denser plantings, making the transition from water to branches and canopy a useful way to explore the park. At the bank, an entire bird may be visible; among trees, an individual movement catches the eye. Ostankino belongs to a larger green network with VDNKh and the Main Botanical Garden, yet retains its own scale and historic estate pond. A walk with binoculars can begin with an open waterside view and then follow changing bird activity into the wooded areas.

The pond was created in the 1790s during the development of the Sheremetev estate's English landscape park. Unlike a formal garden, that design worked with freer outlines of water and vegetation. In 1932, Ostankino Park was established on the grounds of the palace-and-park ensemble. Modern paths and leisure areas belong to its urban history, while the pond still connects a walk with the former estate composition. The relationship between historic water and woodland makes the past visible in the landscape itself, as well as in buildings.
Ruddy shelducks were noted in Ostankino in 2024. Their orange colour helps pick them out on water; in flight, pale wing areas contrast strongly with dark flight feathers. Garden Pond provides an open view for comparing the outlines and behaviour of waterbirds. Following an individual from water to land reveals changes in posture, movement, and visible plumage. An unhurried change of viewpoint can reveal more about a bird than a brief glance at the entire group.
