About the park
Svyatoye Lake in Kosino is open water framed by shoreside vegetation on Moscow's eastern edge. Its natural character differs from that of a landscaped city pond: the water surface, vegetated margins and adjoining land form distinct habitats. The boundary between water and cover is especially interesting for birdwatching. A swimming bird can be followed more easily in the open, then disappear quickly near a densely vegetated shore.

Svyatoye belongs to the Kosino lake group alongside Beloye and Chyornoye. These waters have a long scientific history. In 1908 the Kosino Biological Station was established on Beloye Lake with the involvement of zoologist Grigory Kozhevnikov. Freshwater life was being studied here long before the surroundings became a densely developed part of the capital. In 2006 the Kosinsky nature and history park brought the lakes and neighbouring natural areas under shared protection.
Research from the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries recorded breeding Great Crested Grebe on Svyatoye Lake. This bird feeds by diving: its movement across the surface is interrupted by a plunge, and it may reappear some distance away. A Great Crested Grebe has an elongated neck and pointed bill, with conspicuous head ornaments in spring. Watching the open water while keeping the edge of the vegetation in view makes it easier to pick up a bird after a dive, even when it has changed direction.
