Two ponds linked by channels occupy the site of the small Samoroika stream, and water was brought to them from the Ligovsky Canal. The larger pond has two islands; soil excavated to make the ponds was piled into viewing mounds. Old trees survive mainly around the garden’s edges, where oaks predominate alongside larches and lindens. In the centre, open ground alternates with post-war plantings of trees and shrubs, so the dense wooded edge gives way to more spacious areas.

The garden was laid out between 1783 and 1800, alongside the construction of Tauride Palace, by the English garden master V. Guld. Its name is linked to Grigory Potemkin, who received the title Prince of Tauride for leading Russia’s successful conquest of Crimea; Taurida was the ancient Greek name for the peninsula. The palace, garden and estate lands formed a single landscape and architectural complex. The garden opened to visitors in 1866. The flood of 1924 and the Siege of Leningrad badly damaged it; the first post-war restoration was completed in 1958, and a later restoration ran from 1997 to 2001.
