About the park
In central Kazan, Black Lake park occupies a lowland that stretches from west to east. A pond lies at its western end, while a garden fills the eastern part; the garden’s entrance is through the Lovers’ Arch. Chernyshevsky Street marks the park’s western edge and Lobachevsky Street its eastern edge, while Dzerzhinsky Street borders it to the north and south.

The park takes its name from the large lake that once occupied this lowland. In the early 19th century, the banks were terraced and covered with turf, and plants were set along the paths; an iron railing enclosed the park in 1847. The shallow lake gradually became marshy and polluted, so it was filled in over time, with the work completed in 1889. The All-Russian Industrial Exhibition took place on the site in 1890, and the surviving plantings became the foundation of Nikolayevsky Square. The park later acquired a sporting role: bandy began to be played on its skating rink in 1925, marking the beginning of the history of Kazan Dynamo.
Among the birds recorded nearby are the mallard, rock pigeon, great crested grebe, Eurasian coot and hooded crow.
